First visit here. Service was friendly, decor was nice and the place was clean. Typical work lunch crowd on a weekday. As orders were leaving the kitchen they looked amazing. I ordered the teri chicken egg noodles. I did not enjoy this and felt the flavor was bland, the chicken was dry and the veggies were soggy. I picked at some of the noodles and left the rest. My husband ordered the lemongrass pork crispy noodles. Didn't really get the lemongrass flavor and he said the sauce was too sweet. I may be willing to come again and try the pho but otherwise I think I could make the dish better myself.

Some of the best Asian/ Vietnamese food in town, period! Besides from my mother in law, of course. "Hi mom!" I have been coming here for a while now. My favorite dish is the grilled pork vermicelli. One word... Delicious! Not only does it taste great, it's extremely affordable. If your are into spicy, make sure to try the house hot sauce. One minor thing, just wish they had my favorite fruit smoothie, watermelon!!!

Second time here. Pho was good on the first visit. This time got the tofu stir fry...couldn't finish it...too sweet. Service at the counter was less than welcoming. Won't be returning.

Unfortunately, I'm biased. I grew up on Vietnamese cooking and I live in Argyle St in Chicago - so I have Viet food all the time. Considering this is Love Park, it's decent. My husband and mom got the pho - didn't have that much flavor and I needed to dash some more fish sauce in my hubby's soup. I got the combo vermcelli noodles - with beef and egg rolls. BIG dish with noodles, veggies, meat, and egg rolls. Pretty good over all - but not alot of strong flavors. About $23 for 3 dishes, so very affordable.

I've had a number of excellent meals here. As others note, this restaurant is a great addition to the Stateline area. The menu has expanded beyond the great pho to include very tasty stir fried noodle options (I had the tofu). If you want things with a little more zing, just ask. Owners are very friendly. Service is fast. Recently, owners began serving beer and wine, making this excellent little place even better. When we were there, they were doing a wine tasting!

I travel all over the US and this is a gem for Rockford/Loves Park to have. Very good food, great flavors, fast and courteous service. Order ahead so you can start eating when you arrive.

I think it is as good as it gets- But I am not an expert on pho, the dish. The broth is bright and clear, truly fantastic French technique. Great noodles, not stuck together. They are happy to make chicken pho, no veggies, for the kids. Great staff, very quick service. Clean environment, small eat-in area, but we have never had to wait for a table. I have tried the spring rolls, egg rolls, other dishes, I keep ordering the pho. For those who are interested, they have 'bubble' drinks. We eat there once a week. Very highly recommended.

Their curry is boss, grilled sandwiches are boss, never had their pho. I don't have anything negative to say. I order from them all the time. Have yet to have a bad experience.

If you love clear broth, may be you'll like it here. But I'm into tasty broth, and I know another place that does that well in Rockford

Had the Pho, very tasty!!! Great on cold days, warm beef noodle soup. Spring roll is very good. Hubby love the stir fry noodle. Must try :)

I absolutely love this place. I'm not usually one to try a lot of different Asian cuisines, but I was taken here with a friend one night and I'm glad I tried it! It's a fairly small, clean restaurant and the staff is super friendly. I stared at the menu for at least 5-10 minutes and had tons of questions, and the lady at the cash register had no problem answering all of them for me. I ended up getting the pho stir fry with chicken and it was awesome. They give you a huge portion (I ended up having it for 2 more meals at home) and it's all super fresh. I also had one of the spring rolls in the peanut sauce and wow, was that good. The prices are reasonable too, which is a definite plus. Can't wait to go back again and would recommend to everyone!

very casual setting at Pho with classic simple Vietnamese food. many healthy and even gluten free options. Vietnamese ice coffee is great!

  • Janey K.

The pho is really good, and the place is super clean, and the service is friendly and efficient. What more can you ask for, especially with such reasonable prices! I would say this place is best for lunch or last minute dinner. It is much better than any fast food and about the same price. A healthier choice as well for those who are on the go. Call ahead, and they will have your order ready. I have stomach problems, so I buy the pho often, so as not to make my family eat soup too often. Spring rolls are also on my fav list. Great place overall!

Great value! Large selection of rice, or noodle based entrees. We always find the vegetable ingredients fresh and crisp. I recommend the noodle and stir fry chicken. The pork dishes seem a little tough and fatty the times I've ordered them. Shrimp entrees are very good also. Spring rolls are fresh and tasty. Egg rolls a little on the greasy side. Staff is friendly and helpful. Usually very clean and neat environment. This restaurant is a nice break from the usual fast food fare.

Have never had Pho before and wish I had tried it sooner. This was awesome. I have been here about 12 times now and have yet to get something I don't like. The spring rolls with peanut sauce is amazing. I have had the chicken pho the seafood pho and the rib eye pho, all taste great. The broth is awesome along with the portion size. Cant go wrong here for a quick lunch. I will be back again.

Sorry, I don't know what all the fuss is about. I have been wanting to try it. It was a very unsatisfying pho. I ordered it to go, no herbs came with it. Damn it, I should of checked before I left. The broth isn't amazing, was greasy. And wasn't flavorful like my two favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Chicago. The lady at the desk didn't think I knew what pho was. Kind of ignorant and racist, in fact. And only a strip of meat for a $7 meal? You kidding, right? Yes, only one strip of beef. I will never be back, and will recommend others to go else where for a good meal, you won't find it there.

I've never had Pho before in my life. In fact I'm not even sure how to pronounce Pho. I thought I would try to start this review with a pun like other people that have reviewed places that serve PHO, but since I'm having that pronunciation issue, I decided to just skip it. This place has been on my "To Try" list for a while now. Having never tried Vietnamese food before, I've been curious. I love trying new things and there are very few ethnic foods I don't like. Of course walking in I have no idea what to order and their menu has a lot of choices on it. For me it was easy to limit it to the PHO, I mean it's in the name of the place, it must be their specialty. Now they have PHO and stir fried PHO. I had some difficulty wrapping my brain around that as from the reviews I read I thought all PHO was kind of like a soup, I guess I'm wrong. I told you I know nothing about Pho! I ended up order the grilled meatball pho. Since so many Yelpers said the shrimp spring rolls were good, I order some of them too. Every other spring roll I've had has been fried, these were not. In fact it reminded me more of a sandwich rap than what I'm used to getting. Have I mentioned I had NO experience with Vietnamese food before? It wasn't until I got home and did a quick search on the internet that I discovered that there are different types of spring rolls. I like the spring rolls, they came with a peanut sauce for dipping and I thought they tasted very good. The Pho was interesting. I liked it. I can't compare it to anything, but I thought it was pretty good. The meatballs I had were different. I'm not sure I liked them as much as the rest. They had kind of a weird texture to them and the flavor, while not bad, was not something I thought wasn't all that great. The flavor of the broth and noodles was fantastic in my opinion. Be careful of the portion size. When I first ordered, I asked for a large. The lady at the counter showed me the bowls they came in, I changed my order. The standard size was more than enough for me, especially with the spring rolls. The restaurant is located in a strip mall and has the layout of a fast food restaurant. You place your order at the counter and then they bring your food to you when it's ready. The have a container at each table with spoons, forks and chop sticks for you to use. The service was fantastic and the lady working the counter was patient with me while I ordered. The food was brought out fast and hot. We were easily able to eat there during our hour lunch. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some different varieties. I don't know if this is good Pho, but it was good food.

Great Pho and stir fried noodle dishes. Very friendly staff. It looks like a fast food place, and it is, but feel free to linger and enjoy.

This place was actually better than the Vietnamese food I had in LA. That's saying a lot considering the huge Asian population there. Very good food and friendly service for a great price. Get the vermicelli for a more "filling" option, but it's all good.

  • Jason K.

New to the Loves Park area, so was happy/relieved to find decent Vietnamese food just a stone's throw away from my home. People were extremely friendly and helpful with suggestions. As you'd guess, they're specialty is Pho, which I went with (chicken for the protein) as well as an order of shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls were good, fresh, & generous in portion size. The Pho came out steaming hot, the broth was very flavorful, and the noodles were plentiful as well. The only knock on the dish was that there wasn't a ton of chicken, but the chicken that was there was a little tough. With the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff, I'll definitely be back to Pho Square.

  • Jeanne L.

"Fast food pho real" - less than 5 minutes elapsed from when I ordered to when I actually got the pho. That's MUCH faster service than at most fried chicken places that I've been to. I like the taste of the pho better at this restaurant than at Saigon (which is just a few blocks west). The only downside is that the servings are kinda small. I scarfed down my pho in about the same amount of time that I waited for it. It was almost like I had just gone through a cup of instant noodles . (Btw, I did *NOT* burn my tongue.)

Apparently Pho Square has a secret menu with bahn mi. I had pretty low expectations, but they were greatly exceeded and I may even like their bahn mi more than some of the places I've eaten at in Southern California. They offer grilled chicken and pork, both were very good. I'm happy that a place in Rockford has them now. However, I wish they had bahn mi dac biet. I'm still not convinced that their pho is better than Saigon's, which is a block away. The pho has improved though. Both are about the same price for a large pho, but Saigon's large is much bigger. Saigon also lets you put in the vegetables (rau) yourself, but Pho Square puts them in for you. On the plus side, Pho Square puts tendon in their pho which is perhaps my favorite. I really wish the two Vietnamese restaurants had opened farther away from each other. I doubt both can survive. But anyway, try Pho Square's bahn mi! They are good! They just need to get che ba mau (three color drink) and bahn xeo on the menu and I'd be pretty satisfied.

This place is reasonably priced and very good. I eat here regularly and I've never had a bad meal. The atmosphere is OK, but if you want a fancier place you'll pay more for it. I highly recommend trying them.

  • Patrick H.

Meatballs look incredibly unappealing, almost like Spaghetti-O's meatballs, and all the blandness too. The broth wasn't much better. The only redeeming factor were the egg rolls which were pretty dang good.

Wow! Who knew you can find good Vietnamese food in Rockford. This is a nice, small place that is clean and bright. The staff is pleasant and happy to serve you. The menu is simple and sufficient. I ordered the shrimp and pork summer roll and the pho beef combo. The summer roll was of good size. It had lots of vegetables and noodles. There was plenty of shrimp and pork. The sauce, on the other hand, was not very flavorful - it was not peanutty enough. It would've been better if they had added roasted chopped peanuts. The pho soup had a good flavor - you can taste the spices. It was not too sweet nor salty - balanced. For a large size, it was enough for lunch. I know there are other places that have XL sizes, but for a place like this, it would've been too much. They serve each bowl with a wedge of lime and 3 slices of jalapenos. The Thai basil and bean sprouts were already in the bowl. This combo included rare steak, but by the time I got it, the steak was already submerged in the soup - please leave mine on top so that I can see the pink! I would also love to see some tripe or tendon - maybe to risque for Rockfordians. I only travel to Rockford for business, so the next time I come through, I'll definitely have a go at their other dishes; maybe their bun cha gio?

Let me start by saying, I have never eaten Vietnamese food before, so I have nothing to compare this to. I also just learned that apparently Pho is a type of Vietnamese food... well alrighty then! I need to brush up on my Vietnamese apparently! Decided to come here one day for lunch. Walking in the place was small but with sufficient seating. The staff was patient while I mused over the menu and then ordered Pho stir fry with grilled pork. The service was fast and efficient. I was surprised to see not only silverware but re-usable chopsticks! I opted for a fork. The food came out exceptionally quick and was freshly made. My dish came with rice noodles, veggies and bean sprouts. The grilled pork was on skewers on top. The noodles were very good and had a flavor I'd never encountered before. I believe it was peanuts and ginger. The pork was very tender as well. I wouldn't suggest eating here if you any type of nut allergy, but I would be willing to go back again and try some other things.

Ordered chicken teriyaki stir fry pho for take out. A rather large portion of noodles and menu described veg. Also included two great tasting but kinda small skewers of chicken; maybe just seemed small in comparison to noodles. Overall great tasting meal and not greasy at all.

Nice place considering the kind of out of the way town it's in. The menu is simple and is hanging on the wall behind the register. You just step up and order, pay, take a number and have a seat. My shrimp spring roll appetizer came out quick. It was paired with peanut sauce but I usually opt for dipping in Hoisin Sauce and Sriracha. Then came the Pho Chicken, a first for me. I usually get Pho Bah or the like. I believe the chicken pho was added to the menu for an Americanized version. Anyway, it was pretty good. I am accustomed to having the bean sprouts and basil served on the side with a few jalapeños and lime pieces. However, the basil and sprouts were added before it came to the table and the japs and limes were in a container by the drink machine. All in all it's about the broth and the freshness of everything and on that account, everything was really good. The only somewhat negative was the price. It came to $11.50 for the 2 fat rolls and a Large bowl of pho. Seemed a little high but I would definitely return. -Enjoy-

Good people! Went out of their way for us. Will return again and again. So far, best Pho in Rockford...and I think we've almost tried them all. Oh, and the avacodo smoothie was surprisingly good, it doesn't taste like you'd think it would.

This is a "fast food restaurant" for me. The food I have is spring rolls and the spicy noodle soup. The taste is fair. If you want a fast Vietnamese food, here you go.

I'd say, for Rockford, it's a highlight. The food is good, service is friendly, and the price is right. I've been eating here since it opened and I've only seen it get busier as the years have gone by. Worth a stop in if you get the chance.

Very delicious. Tried lemongrass grilled chicken on rice and it is probably as good as and even better in my opinion than the ones I tried in nyc, jersey city, and other places.

I've only known the taste bud magic of Pho in the last year and now i crave it all the time. I tried it for the first time at a local downtown rockford restaurant but during the week Pho Square is a fantastic option. Its a smaller establishment but they have a ton of options. I always order the well done beef pho and shrimp spring rolls. I love the spring rolls and the peanut sauce theyre served with and the small pho is a perfect lunch portion! I keep meaning to try new things but i Just cant pass up the pho. It seems sinful to even try haha! The service is friendly and prices are decent. Usually runs me about $11 with a fountain drink. My only suggestion would to be have someone who busses tables more frequently. Theyre busy so "used" tables rack up quickly and new customers need clean places to sit! Otherwise, this is a great little place to grab vietnamese food!

Yum!! Got the chicken/Turkey pho, the chicken pho xao, and the shrimp spring rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious. My favorite was the Chicken Pho Xao. It had a really rich flavor and the chicken was perfectly cooked. We paid $17 for everything. You order at the front and then they bring it to the table. I will definitely be coming back.

Great experience. Casual atmosphere and friendly staff - they explained the different items/options as it was our first time there. We had the fresh spring rolls and seafood pho. Excellent food. Our 4 year old daughter had the stir fry egg noodles with chicken. She said, "these are better than any noodles I've ever had in my life!" I tasted them - they were pretty good! We will be back for sure.

    (4)
  • Lori M.

Disappointed. Got the shrimp egg noodles. They had an odd sweetness to them, I usually like sweet but not this. The egg rolls were ok, better than my meal but a bit greasy. My husband got the pork curry which he was told was spicy. It wasn't spicy at all.

    (2)
  • kate c.

I had the shrimp and lemongrass combo vermicelli bowl. I liked it but next time I will get shrimp plus a chopped egg roll. The chicken was a bit dry. Bf got curry and liked it. We will definitely be back.

I'm pheeling a bit lyrical today. Let's try this review in verse. Pho cuisine is known for its big bowl soup Philled wih veggies, some meat, and lots of noodles that droop The menu includes rice, stir phry, and vermicelli. And large portions on all will phill the hungriest belly. The spring roll here is a phavorite of mine It larger than most and is simply devine So if you never had pho come down phor a treat For the Pho at the Square will be tough to beat, And a good meal here only costs a phew bucks and is great, unlike my verse Which pretty much sucks. Oh well, guess that last verse says it all

  • Kyle I.

My GF and I intentionally went to this restaurant to confirm or, as you will see by this review, refute the lofty claims made by initial reviewer of Pho Square. First and foremost, the soup is by no means FROM Vietnam. The soup is Vietnamese; I'm certain the food we ate was not actually brought over from the actual country of Vietnam by the proprietor (I.E. I am a Japanese person; I am not a person from Japan.) Anyways... The broth was saltier than usual. Good Pho is supposed to be more overwhelming with the aromatics from the exotic ingredients. If you are unsure of what ingredients I am talking about please refer to the first review of Hai Quynh Restaurant " yelp.com/biz/hai-quynh-r… ; I would not go as far to say they use MSG, most restaurants catering towards the white demographic tend to stay away from it. I would argue that the level of saltiness is a byproduct of reheated iodized salt and the fish sauce. Iodized salt has the tendency to make foods more salty when reheated, which is why most chefs use kosher or sea salt. Why do you ask I mention reheated? Simply because the broth was most likely rendered earlier in the week, which by no means is a bad thing. The best Pho, in my humble opinion (IMHO) to the contrary, is made from broth that has been stewing for many many MANY days. The portions were medium size, relative to Hai Qunyh and Saigon. The meat to noodle ratio was 2:3. I did not like how my pho was pre-doctored with greens and sprouts. However, upon request, they furnished extras. All in all Pho Square is a decent joint. If it had been around when I first started frequenting the Rockford area (2 years ago) I might have been less apprehensive toward the town and its lack of cultural food. The setup of the restaurant is kind of Fast-Food-Pho, which is nice. The owner mentioned how she is working on a banh xeo recipe, as well as toying with the idea of making Banh mi (Vietnamese sammiches) in the near future. I shall return if this happens

  • Natalie H.

Wow, am I really in Loves Park here? Pho Square is a fast, healthy, and cheap option for some very decent Northern -style pho. I had the chicken pho ($7 for an abundant bowl) and the broth was not greasy at all - full of flavor. Not a whole lot of extras here - a few hot peppers, rice noodles, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts, green onion, red chili and lime - delicious! The Vietnamese iced coffee ($3) was a good strong coffee, but came in the consistency of a slushie, had a great taste, just an odd t texture. We went during lunch on a week-day and they weren't very busy in the restaurant (which was pretty clean, nothing fancy) but they had a consistent carry-out crowd. Go try this place if you are a pho-fan and hopefully they will be able to stay above water!

  • ryan m.

Hands down the best pho in the Rockford area, and I've tried it all from the handful of places around here that serve the delicious noodle soup from Vietnam. The owners are great, the ingredients are fresh (and don't rely on MSG like say, a certain pho restaurant just down the road), and the portions are huge. Both the egg rolls and spring rolls are delicious and packed to the brim with meat and/or shrimp and fresh vegetables. Best of all, the food, which is considered street fare in Vietnam, is served in an extremely relaxed and casual setting. Highly recommended! We need places like this to stay alive in Rockford, so show your support, tell your friends, and eat this delicious, healthy food!

  • Chris W.

Hmmm... not sure why Kyle is talking about as the Pho is amazing and no one said the Pho actually CAME from Vietnam. Every Pho dish is brilliant to the flavor, to the portion, to the fact that no one in the area comes close to competing with them. The egg rolls and spring rolls are the best I've had and not coming from only going to restaurants for my food but I've eating Vietnamese food from vietnamese families. This is close to home cooked and is amazing each and every time!

We are regulars here. I like the beef and meatball pho...broth is excellent. I am sad they took the meatball skewers off the menu.

I really enjoy all of the Pho options here but generally order the veggie pho. The spring rolls are also excellent. I love how I feel satisfied and very full after eating here, but do not feel weighed down. Everything I order here is always fresh, aromatic, and very delicious.

After starting a job about a month ago, I was relieved to find a good Vietnamese restaurant! I stopped here after my shift the other night and got the Pho with meatball and rare beef to go. They packaged it conveniently for me to take home and enjoy. I thought the broth was good as they did not add too much fish sauce and the beef was nice and soft. I also like that they offer a small option for those who can't finish a large. I will def be back here for some yummy pho.

  • Aldo R.

I love their Pho. Their customer service is very welcoming and willing to answer any questions for people like me who are not so very familiar with Vietnamese cuisine. I feel nutritious!

Stopped here for lunch and got chicken curry, a rice noodle dish, and steak pho. The food came out quickly, with friendly service. The ingredients in all our dishes were fresh, and they weren't stingy with the amount of food given. We were happily satisfied. Definitely would come here again.

Went in this place a little after dinner hours. Was greated by a Hispanic guy. I ordered an egg roll and the Bun Bo Hue(way). It was my first time there, I was looking for the forks/chopsticks/soup spoons and condiments. They are set at the side of the drink machine. The first soup spoon I grabbed was oily and still had food on it(yuck). I grab the second, cleaner but still dirty. I just opt for the metal spoon(I wiped it down). I then noticed that the meat in my soup was grilled meats and meats for the pho soup instead of the bun bo hue. At this time I was ready to leave but everywhere else was closed except fast food. I wouldn't recommend anyone to get the bun bo hue here. I eat alot of Vietnamese food everwhere and by far this is one of the worst places to eat it. Two stars for smiles and trying.

Amazing vietnamese in the heart of Rockford- everything is fantastic and fresh and made to order bahn mi is the classic standby- pork lemongrass is the best! pho is very yummy and perfect on a cold day the vietnamese iced coffee is always perfect (and I don't even like coffee- but I love this stuff) spring rolls are also great YOU MUST TRY and won't regret it! Order at the counter and then they will deliver to your table I always see local vietnamese eating-- so you know it must be good! it's a mom and pop/family run shop- so that's also great to see!

  • Heather H.

I eat here at least once a week! I love the veggie spring rolls, the shrimp curry with noodles and the chicken pho! The staff is great. They know me by name and are always happy to see me. The food tastes great and doesn't weigh you down. I definitely recommend that you try it if you haven't yet. Great for quick carry out too!

Good for Rockford area or a place that doesn't have many Vietnamese options... Not good for a girl with taste buds from the central region of Vietnam (take notes if you're Vietnamese because you know what I mean). I didn't try their smoothies. I'm very picky about that though. Wish I did. Ordered... 1. Egg rolls - filled like Chinese but the wrap is Viet. Not authentic, but good. 2. Bun Bo Hue - it's ok. The broth isn't as full flavor as it should be. 3. The bf said the chicken pho wasn't good. I didn't bother to try. (They have seafood pho?!?!) 4. Spring rolls - I liked that they didn't use sausage to fill up flavor and they served with peanut butter sauce! Mmmm! 5. Bun thit nuong - the fish sauce tastes like juice. I drank it from the cup. The pork was overdone.
